Indirect Question คือคำถามแบบอ้อม ไม่ได้ถามตรงๆ ซึ่งเป็นคำถามตรงกันข้ามกับ Direct Question นั่นเอง วิธีการนำไปใช้ก็เพื่อต้องการทราบข้อมูลด้วยกันทั้ง 2 แบบนั่นแหละ แต่คำถามแบบอ้อมเป็นการถามแบบสุภาพนั่นเอง
Direct Questin & Indirect Question คืออะไร
- Direct Question คือ คำถามที่ถามตรงๆ ไม่อ้อมค้อม เช่น
Who is that man? ชายคนนั้นคือใคร
What time is it? เวลาเท่าไหร่ - Indirct Question คือคำถามแบบอ้อม ถ้าเทียบกับภาษาไทยก็ประมาณว่า “คุณพอจะทราบไหมว่า…” “คุณพอจะรู้ไหมว่า…” เป็นต้น เช่น
Do you know who that man is? คุณพอจะรู้ไหมว่าชายคนนั้นคือใคร
Do you know what time it is? คุณพอจะรู้ไหมว่าเวลาเท่าไหร่
คำถามแบบ indirect มักจะมีวลีนำหน้า ประมาณว่า
- Could you tell me…..? ช่วยบอกฉันหน่อยได้ไหมอ่ะ…
- Do you know….? คุณพอจะรู้ไหมว่า…
- Do you have any idea…? คุณทราบไหมว่า…
- I was wondering….ผมอยากทราบว่า…
- I’d like to know… ผมอยากทราบว่า
- I don’t know… ผมไม่รู้ว่า…
สำนวนต่อไปนี้ไม่ใช่การถามตรงๆ แต่เป็นการถามแบบอ้อมๆหน่ะครับ ซึ่งจะมาในรูปของประโยคบอกเล่านะ ซึ่งไม่มีเครื่องหมายคำถาม (?)
- I was wondering….ผมอยากทราบว่า…
- I’d like to know… ผมอยากทราบว่า
- I don’t know… ผมไม่รู้ว่า…
เปรียบเทียบระหว่างสองประโยคนี้
- Could you tell me where I can park the car?
คุณช่วยบอกผมหน่อยได้ไหมว่า ผมสามารถจอดรถได้ตรงไหน - I don’t know where I can park the car.
ผมไม่รู้ว่าผมสามารถจอดรถได้ตรงไหน - Direct: What is your job?
ถามตรง : คุณทำงานอะไร
– ถามแบบนี้ต้องใช้เสียงนุ่มนวล ถ้าถามแบบเสียงแข็งๆ เหมือนจะหาเรื่องดูถูกอาชีพเขานะ.. - Indirect: Could you tell what your job is?
ถามอ้อม : ช่วยบอกอาชีพของคุณหน่อยค่า…
– อันนี้ถ้าเติมเสียงหวานๆเข้าไปด้วยนี่ … รีบบอกโดยพลัน ครับผม.. I’m a farmer. ผมเป็นชาวนาครับ (มีที่นา 100 ไร่ สวนทุเรียนอีก 200 ไร่) - Direct: What time is it?
ถามตรง : เวลาเท่าไหร่ – เวลาเท่าไหร่ เกี่ยวอะไรกับคุณ พูดเสียงห้วนๆ ไม่บอกหรอก - Indirect: Do you know what time it is?
ถามอ้อม : คุณพอจะทราบไหมว่าเวลาเท่าไหร่แล้ว – อ๋อ..ทราบครับ It’s two o’clock. เวลา 2 โมงแล้ว
สองประโยคด้านบน อันหนึ่งเป็นคำถาม อีกอันเป็นบอกเล่า แต่ทั้งคู่ก็เป็นการถามแบบอ้อมๆนั่นเอง มาดูเปรียบเทียบกันดีว่านะครับว่าการถามแบบอ้อมสุภาพกว่าการถามตรงๆอย่างๆไร
การแต่งประโยค Indirect Question
ประโยคคำถามแบบ indirect วลีหรือประโยคที่ตามหลังมา จะเรียงเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าธรรมดานะครับ ไม่ต้องทำเป็นคำถามแต่อย่างใด (คำถามคือกริยานำหน้าประธานประโยค)
สามารถแต่งประโยคได้ทั้ง Yes-No question และ Wh question
สำนวนที่ใช้นำหน้าจะเอาตัวไหนก็ได้ ขอยกตัวอย่างแค่อันเดียวนะครับ คือ Could you tell me…
Yes-No Indirect Question
yes-no question จะใช้ if กับ whether มาคั่นครับ สองคำนี้แปลว่า “ว่า…” คำตอบก็ Yes, No ธรรมดานั่นแหละครับ เหมือน กริยาช่วยทั้ง 24 ตัว

ตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ ประโยคที่มีเครื่องหมาย ผิด คือผิดหลักการนะครับ ต้องใช้ประโยคที่มีเครื่องหมายถูกนะครับ
- Direct: Is she okay? (หล่อนโอเคไหม)
Indirect: Could you tell me if is she okay? ×
Indirect: Could you tell me if she is okay? √
(ช่วยบอกผมหน่อยว่าหล่อนโอเคไหม) - Direct: Does he like cats? (เขาชอบแมวไหม)
Indirect: Could you tell me if does he like cats? ×
Indirect: Could you tell me if he likes cats? √
(ช่วยบอกผมหน่อยว่าเขาชอบแมวไหม) - Direct: Can you sing? (คุณร้องเพลงเป็นไหม)
Indirect: Could you tell me if can you sing? ×
Indirect: Could you tell me if you can sing? √
(ช่วยบอกผมหน่อยว่าคุณร้องเพลงเป็นไหม) - Direct: May they come today? (พวกเขาจะมาวันนี้ไหม)
Indirect: Could you tell me if may they come today? ×

(ช่วยบอกผมหน่อยว่าพวกเขาจะมาวันนี้ใช่ไหม) - Direct: Will Sam come with us? (แซมจะมากับพวกเราไหม)
